Sweet Cheese Rolls Recipe
Dough Ingredients:
- Milk – 200 ml, warm
- Eggs – 2
- Active Dry Yeast – 6 g (1 tsp heaped)
- Sugar – 60 g (3 tbsp)
- Melted Butter – 50 ml
- Flour – 450 g
- Salt – 0.5 tsp
- Vanillin (or vanilla extract) – to taste
Filling Ingredients:
- Cottage Cheese (Tvorog) – 200 g, strained if too wet
- Egg – 1
- Powdered Sugar – 45 g (3 tbsp)
- Cornstarch – 15 ml (1 tbsp)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- Dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of the sugar in the warm milk. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture, the rest of the sugar, eggs, melted butter, salt, and vanillin.
- Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Make the Filling:
- In a bowl, mix together the cottage cheese, egg, powdered sugar, and cornstarch until well combined.
- Form the Rolls:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions.
- Roll each portion into a circle or oval shape.
- Place a spoonful of the cheese filling in the center of each piece of dough.
- Fold the dough over the filling and seal the edges, forming the rolls into crescent shapes or pockets.
- Bake the Rolls:
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F).
- Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Let them rest for another 10-15 minutes. Then, if you like, brush the tops with an egg wash for a shiny finish.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown.
- Serve:
- Allow the rolls to cool on a wire rack.
- Optionally, dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.
